Restoring/re-installing your operating system is often the best solution for many of the problems users experience with their PC's. Whether you're experiencing problems (such as lockups, bluescreens, boot errors, general system instability, or have lost/forgotten your password) or you just want a fresh start, this guide will provide you with detailed instructions for doing just that.
A soft reset will..
- Perform a clean installation of the Windows operating system.
- Remove applications and settings.
- Allow you to retain your personal files.
It should be noted that after completing these steps you may also be required to install certain hardware-enabling drivers to enable functionality of certain features.
|Getting Started - Obtaining Installation Media
Before you begin make sure you have:
- An Internet connection (Internet service provider fees may apply).
- Access to an alternate computer to facilitate the download (Note, this only applies in situations where the target computer is unable to boot, or be used to complete the download.
- Sufficient data storage available on a computer, USB or external drive for the download.
- A blank USB drive with at least 4 GB of space if you want to create media. Note: Any content the USB drive will be erased while creating installation media.
Downloading the Media
- Open your browser and navigate to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/software-download/windows10, or click here to download the Media Creation Tool now.
- Save the downloaded file to a familiar location.
|Creating Installation Media (USB-EFI Boot Device)
|Before you begin
- Insert a blank USB drive with a minimum of 4GB capacity.
- Navigate to the downloaded file (MediaCreationTool.exe) and double-click the file to launch the tool.
- Review the License Terms as appropriate, and click Next if you agree.
- Select 'Create installation media for another PC' and click Next.
- Uncheck 'Use recommended settings', and specify the Language, Edition and Architecture (Please note, you must select Windows Home as the Edition and 64x as the Architecture, as this aligns with the original factory license) and click Next.
- Make note of Windows Setup license notification and click Next.
- Select the drive listed under External Drives, and click Next.
- Choose USB Flash Drive as the Media Type, and click Next.
Note, the time required to complete media creation may vary depending on internet speed and system configuration.
|Booting to the EFI-USB Boot Device
|Before you begin ensure the following:
Accessing the Boot Menu
- Target system is powered OFF.
- Target system is connected to an HDMI display device (external monitor/TV/projector).
- Keyboard is connected to the target system.
- Insert the USB Boot Device created in prior steps.
- Power ON the target system.
- Press F10 at POST (when the Kangaroo logo is displayed, as below).
Note: Upon completing the above steps you will be presented with the EFI Boot Manager shown below. If your system fails to display the Boot Manager it's possible the monitor/panel being used requires more time to process the signal than is allocated in current specifications; it's common with older devices to include a slight delay in the time between when the HDMI signal is initiated and the actual signal is displayed; in such cases you may wish to begin pressing the F10 key on your keyboard immediately after pressing the power button.
Configuring the Boot Manager
- Use the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to and select your USB device.
- Once the correct device is highlighted press ENTER and the system will begin booting to the device.
|Re-Installing the Operating System - Soft Reset
- Instructions included in this section are intended to address recovery from a failed Windows Update, such as an upgrade from Build 10240 to Build 10586 (or the Redstone Technical Insider Preview Build 11082).
- Other scenarios may include lost/forgotten password, damaged or corrupted operating system files, or instances where re-installation of the operating system is recommended in effort to restore system stability.
- Completing the steps that follow will perform a soft-reset of your PC, allowing you to retain your personal files.
Initial Setup Options
- Upon booting to the EFI-USB media you will be presented with a choice of Regional Settings; select the appropriate options for your region and click Next.
- The next windows which appears presents installation and repair options; select Repair your computer, appearing in the bottom left-corner of this window.
Resetting your PC
- Select Troubleshoot from the option menu, as illustrated in step-2 of the graphic below.
- From the Troubleshooting menu, choose Reset this PC. (Note: If you wish to explore your options, such as Startup Repair, or choosing from a System Restore point, choose Advanced Options; you can always return to this point and proceed with the instructions in this guide if alternative recovery methods prove unsuccessful.
- Selecting Keep my files will allow you to retain personal data, but will remove all applications and settings and re-install the operating system.
- Choose your target operating system - Windows 10. (Note: If you have installed a Technical Preview build it will be displayed here; however, it should be noted that re-installing a technical preview build is not recommended).
- Review the summary presented and click Reset.
|Installing Hardware Enabling Drivers ]
At the time of this release all drivers, with the exception of the Intel Audio Driver are available through Windows Update.
Click here to download the Intel Audio driver.
Audio Driver Installation
- Extract the downloaded file into a known location/folder.
- Right-click on the START menu and select DEVICE MANAGER
- Click on the arrow indicator next to the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" component.
- Right-click on the "Intel SST Audio Device (WDM)" icon, and select Update Driver Software.
- Select "Browse my computer for driver software",
- Click "Browse", and navigate to the folder where the extracted audio files reside and click "OK".
- Verify the location specified is correct (according to the folder selected) and click "NEXT".
Upon completion you will receive a message indicating, "Windows has successfully updated your driver software".
